Why Robusta is better than Arabica?

Why Robusta is better than Arabica?

Why we use single source Robusta for The Coffee Bitch

For decades, Arabica has been marketed as the "premium" coffee. But that's only half the story. If you're making a flat white, Arabica is a great choice.

If you're making authentic Vietnamese coffee…then Robusta always wins.

The Coffee Bitch has More Caffeine. More Kick.

Vietnamese Robusta naturally contains up to 2x more caffeine than Arabica, giving you a stronger, longer-lasting energy boost. Your own brewing guide highlights this as one of Robusta's defining characteristics.

That extra caffeine isn't just about staying awake. It gives Vietnamese coffee the bold intensity it's famous for.

Robusta is Built for Condensed Milk

Arabica's delicate floral flavours often disappear once you add milk. Robusta doesn't.

The Coffee Bitch's brewing guide notes that Robusta's flavours are "not masked by milk and sugar" and that it stands up exceptionally well to condensed milk.

That's exactly why Vietnamese iced coffee tastes rich with chocolate and caramel notes instead of watery.

Big, bold and full Body

Arabica is often light, fruity and tea-like in many ways. The 100% Robusta we use delivers a depth of palat which includes:

  • Dark chocolate
  • Caramel
  • And a rich cream without a heavy or muddy mouthfeel

The Coffee Bitch’s brand positioning also emphasises chocolate and caramel tones as key taste attributes.

The Coffee Bitch Tastes Like Coffee does on the streets of Saigon

Many specialty Arabicas chase subtle tasting notes like jasmine, berries or citrus. Fine ground and medium roast Vietnamese Robusta is unapologetically bold.

Strong without the acidity. Chocolatey in it’s freshly dripped state. Exactly what many people expect authentic Viet coffee to taste like.

Better choice for Iced Coffee

Vietnamese Iced coffee, otherwise known as Cafe Sua Da, is almost always served over ice. When the ice melts, weaker coffees would become diluted. Robusta keeps its flavour.

Check out our brewing guides specifically guiding you on how Vietnamese Robusta as "a particularly excellent choice for iced coffee."

Authentic Vietnamese Coffee Uses Robusta

Vietnam is the world's largest producer of Robusta coffee. The iconic Vietnamese cà phê sữa đá wasn't designed around Arabica beans.

It was built around bold Robusta brewed slowly through a phin filter and balanced with sweet condensed milk. The Coffee Bitch’s mission centres on bringing authentic Vietnamese coffee culture to more people across the world.

Medium Roasted Robusta Isn't Commodity Robusta

This is where many people get it wrong. Cheap instant coffee is what gave Robusta a bad reputation. But modern Vietnamese Robusta—especially carefully selected beans from regions like Buôn Ma Thuột—is a completely different category.

When grown, harvested and roasted properly, medium roasted Robusta produces complex chocolate, caramel and nut flavours with exceptional body and sweetness.

So... Is Robusta Better?

If you love:

  • Strong coffee
  • Iced coffee
  • Traditional Vietnamese coffee
  • Coffee with milk
  • Higher caffeine content
  • Rich chocolate flavours

Then yes. Robusta is probably the better coffee for you.

If you prefer delicate floral aromas, bright acidity and black filter coffee, you may need to look elsewhere.

At The Coffee Bitch, we use Medium Roasted Fine Ground  Single Source Vietnamese Robusta from Boun Ma Thout because it was never trying to be Arabica.
